Abstract

The authors agree that purposeful practice bedside maximizes life expectancy and achieves" ideal health during the full episode of hospitalization and benefits beyond that. While they state that nurses are the only professional resource available on infant units, they did recognize that nurses are perceived as valuable due to their commitment to advanced disease prevention, mitigation of acute clinical risks, and continued contact with families throughout hospitalization. This statement is supported by the research. A quantitative discipline verified that focused nursing work resulted in lower incidence rates of common morbidities, positively steered survival curves in the right direction, and improved health and "growing" disposition for the infants. The text samples this as they reflect back on national benchmarking clinical protocols, types of neonatal nursing practice they follow, types of interventions within those practices, and where they referenced examples of current digital and technology aids being implemented in the units. Integrated models of delivery connecting the professional discipline of nursing, following prescribed protocols by professional medical personnel, have become essential elements, and there was an incredible survival benefit when cumulative effects of systematic linkages with another intervention were included. So, evidence-based protocols are easy. Thus, the last section provides explicit direction: transform the nursing model with tailored, in-service, and degree-directed curricula; use technology that enables real-time visibility and data decision-making; and lastly, take validated protocols beyond the tertiary level and into community networks to bridge the care gap and make a sustainable impact for infants and families who care for them.
